Lantana is a wildly popular landscape perennial in the Southwest for good reason: they are drought, heat, and cold tolerant, all while being very low maintenance. Trailing Purple Lantana is a fast grower, and stays low and spreads wide, forming a full and colorful groundcover in a single growing season. Spring through fall, it forms a carpet of small clusters of lavender flowers that attract butterflies and occasional hummingbirds. The small, sandpapery leaves are true green and strongly aromatic when disturbed. This distinctive aroma offends the sensitive noses of rabbits and deer, causing them to bypass lantana for tastier treats, leaving the rich flowers to be enjoyed by everyone else.
