This show-stopping beauty is sometimes called firecracker plant, but the common name “Coral Fountain” is much more descriptive of the way its branches arch outward and cascade gracefully toward the ground. Layers upon layers of coral red flowers seem to drip from the tips of each branch, creating a stunning effect in tall planters and hanging baskets. These nectar-filled blooms keep the hummingbirds and butterflies busy from spring through fall. Coral Fountain is reminiscent of a grass, but it’s actually a perennial shrub with tiny, inconspicuous leaflets. This plant often goes dormant in winter, but new growth resumes quickly every spring.
