Lily of the Nile's name is deceptive, as this perennial actually originates in South Africa, far from the Nile of northern Africa. Long, narrow, strap like leaves form the base of the plant, making it appear like a grass when not blooming. In summer, 2 ft stalks eminate from the base, producing globes of blue, funnel-shaped flowers. Plant in an area with afternoon shade. Water regularly during summer, and provide moderate fertilization to enhance plant health. In winter, limit water to just enough to keep leaves from wilting. Lily of the Nile works well in containers, and blooms better when root bound. Flower stalks make great cut flowers!
