The Foxtail Fern is an easy choice when it comes to adding texture and color to containers, beds or rock gardens. This evergreen perennial is named for its outstretched stems that radiate out from the center, covered in small, light green, needle-like leaves that give the impression of many foxtails. Small, nondescript flowers emerge in mid-summer, followed by green berries that ripen to a deep red by mid-fall. Cut back to near soil-level in winter if plants become unruly and unkempt. This unique, fern-like plant looks great in mass plantings or trailing out of containers or hanging baskets.
