Firecracker Penstemon offers some of the first blooms to appear in late winter to early spring. 2-foot-long stalks of crimson flowers hover above a mound of dark green foliage while many other desert plants are still dormant. Native to southern California and the Rocky Mountains, this penstemon species is exceptionally drought tolerant and requires excellent drainage to perform well in the landscape.
